Access Databases

Microsoft Access databases are  only meant to be run through wired LANs.  This point cannot be over emphasized!

Access is not meant to be run on:

  • Wireless Networks
  • WANs
  • Online (Offsite) Servers (which qualify as a WAN)
  • Shared Drives like OneDrive, DropBox, et al. (which qualify as WANs)

The fact of the matter is Access is a network hog and it needs the stability of a LAN to ensure proper functioning.   Even within a LAN environment you can encounter issues with network saturation which can corrupt Access databases.

What are the Alternatives Then?

There are a few ways to share a database beyond a LAN, such as:

  • Remote Desktop
  • TeamViewer
  • CITRIX
  • Terminal Services
